The impact of colonial interventions on the tribal economy in India was profound, long-lasting, and largely detrimental. From the beginning of British rule in the mid-18th century, the tribals were subjected to various forms of economic exploitation, displacement, and social disintegration. Tribal communities, who had long sustained themselves through subsistence agriculture, hunting, gathering, and barter trade, found their traditional modes of livelihood disrupted by the colonial policies of revenue extraction, forest management, and the introduction of cash-crop agriculture. These policies not only altered the economic landscape but also marginalized tribal communities, deepening their poverty and subjugation.

Revenue and Land Policies

One of the primary ways in which colonialism impacted the tribal economy was through the introduction of exploitative land and revenue systems. The British colonial administration, particularly under Lord Cornwallis in the late 18th century, introduced the Permanent Settlement and later the Ryotwari and Mahalwari systems. These policies radically transformed the land tenure system in India. The Permanent Settlement, for instance, created a class of zamindars (landowners) who were responsible for collecting land taxes. This system encouraged the concentration of land in the hands of a few, pushing many small farmers, including tribals, into a position of destitution.

For the tribals, who had communal rights over land, forests, and water, the imposition of these land settlement policies meant that their access to land was either significantly reduced or taken away altogether. The British revenue officers, in their quest for maximum revenue generation, often did not recognize the traditional land ownership systems followed by tribal communities, leading to the displacement of tribes from their ancestral lands. As the government pursued agricultural commercialization, tribal lands were increasingly leased out to non-tribal settlers, leading to the alienation of tribal people from their lands.
