(i) Xerophthalmia

Xerophthalmia is a severe eye condition caused by a deficiency of vitamin A. This condition primarily affects young children but can also be seen in pregnant women and those with poor nutrition. It is one of the leading causes of preventable childhood blindness, particularly in developing countries. Xerophthalmia progresses in stages, with each stage having distinct clinical features.

1. Night Blindness (Nyctalopia):  
   - The earliest symptom of xerophthalmia is night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Individuals find it difficult to see in low-light conditions, especially at dusk or during the night.
