The Environment Information System Network in India, commonly known as ENVIS, represents a significant institutional framework designed to organize, disseminate, and improve access to environmental information across the country. Established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in 1982, this system was envisioned as a decentralized but coordinated network that would serve as a repository and clearinghouse of environmental data. In a country like India, where challenges of population growth, urbanization, industrialization, and climate change intersect with diverse ecosystems, the need for structured environmental information becomes particularly urgent. ENVIS has evolved over time as a strategic tool for sustainability, integrating various models of information management, public participation, and technological advancement to strengthen environmental governance. The initial objectives of ENVIS revolved around creating a national system that could collect, collate, store, and disseminate information on environmental issues, thereby reducing data gaps and duplication. Over the years, the program has expanded into a large network consisting of ENVIS Focal Point at MoEFCC, ENVIS Centers hosted by institutions, and a Resource Partner system that addresses specialized thematic areas. This networked structure reflects a model of decentralized knowledge management, where local institutions and subject experts are engaged in specific themes such as biodiversity, pollution control, forestry, climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable development. By linking these institutions, ENVIS promotes the principle of inclusivity in knowledge creation and ensures that diverse stakeholders ranging from policymakers to researchers and the general public have access to reliable data. From the perspective of strategies for sustainability, ENVIS integrates several important approaches. One is the promotion of information transparency. Reliable data on air quality, water resources, forest cover, or hazardous wastes allows policymakers to design interventions that are evidence-based. Transparency in environmental information also ensures accountability among industries, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
