The evidential problem of evil is a central issue in the philosophy of religion that deals with the apparent conflict between the existence of an all-powerful, all-knowing, and wholly good God and the presence of evil in the world. Unlike the logical problem of evil, which asserts that the existence of God and the existence of evil are logically incompatible, the evidential problem of evil is probabilistic and empirical in nature. William Rowe, a prominent philosopher, famously formulated the evidential problem in the 20th century, emphasizing the existence of intense and apparently pointless suffering in the world. Rowe’s argument is illustrative: if there exists a fire in a forest causing immense suffering to innocent creatures, with no greater purpose or good coming from it, it is difficult to reconcile this with the notion of a benevolent and omnipotent God.
