John Locke's theory of personal identity occupies a central place in modern philosophy and has significantly influenced later discussions concerning the nature of the self, consciousness, and moral responsibility. Presented primarily in Book II, Chapter XXVII of *An Essay Concerning Human Understanding*, Locke sought to distinguish the concepts of man, substance, and person. His theory marked a departure from traditional metaphysical accounts that identified personal identity with an immaterial soul or a material body. Instead, Locke argued that personal identity is founded on continuity of consciousness, particularly through memory. This psychological account of identity has remained one of the most influential and controversial theories in philosophy. Locke begins by distinguishing between identity and diversity. Every entity exists at a particular place and time, and identity consists in the continued existence of the same thing. However, different kinds of entities have different criteria of identity. The identity of a mass of matter depends upon the continuity of the same particles. The identity of living organisms depends upon the continuity of life despite changes in material composition. Human beings, as biological organisms, continue to exist even though the matter composing their bodies changes over time. A person, however, is not simply a biological organism but a conscious, thinking being capable of reason, reflection, and self-awareness. According to Locke, a person is "a thinking intelligent being, that has reason and reflection, and can consider itself as itself, the same thinking thing, in different times and places." This continuity of self-awareness constitutes personal identity. The essential feature of a person is consciousness rather than substance. A person remains the same so long as consciousness extends backward to past experiences. Thus, personal identity is psychological rather than physical or metaphysical. Memory plays a central role in Locke's theory. He argues that if a person can remember performing a past action, then the person who remembers is identical with the person who originally performed that action. Consciousness connects present experiences with past experiences and thereby unifies the self across time. If an individual remembers committing a particular deed many years earlier, that remembered action belongs to the same person because consciousness extends from the present to the past. Locke illustrates his view through several examples. One famous example concerns the prince and the cobbler.
