Reasoning is the fundamental process by which the mind moves from known statements or premises to new statements or conclusions. The difference between deductive and inductive reasoning lies primarily in the nature of the connection between premises and conclusion, the level of certainty achieved, and the direction in which inference proceeds. Deductive reasoning is a form of inference in which the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises. If the premises are true and the argument is correctly structured, the conclusion cannot be false. Deduction is therefore truth-preserving. The validity of a deductive argument depends solely on its logical form, not on the actual truth of its premises. An argument may be valid even if its premises are false; however, it is sound only when it is both valid and has true premises. Deductive arguments are evaluated in terms of validity and soundness. Validity concerns the structural relationship between premises and conclusion. If it is impossible for the premises to be true while the conclusion is false, the argument is valid. Soundness adds the requirement that the premises are factually true. Deductive reasoning aims at certainty; when sound, it yields conclusions that are absolutely certain within the framework of the premises.
