'Sanskritization' is a term first coined by Indian sociologist M.N. Srinivas in the 1950s to describe a cultural process observed in Indian society. It refers to the process by which lower castes, tribes, or other marginalized groups attempt to elevate their social status by adopting the customs, rituals, practices, and ideologies of the upper castes, particularly the Brahmins. This includes changes in food habits (e.g., turning vegetarian), dress codes, rituals, language use, religious observances, and even lifestyle. In essence, Sanskritization is a form of social mobility in a caste-based society where those lower in the hierarchy attempt to move upward by imitating the practices of higher castes. From a conceptual perspective within folklore and culture, Sanskritization reflects the dynamic nature of cultural identity and the interaction between dominant and subaltern cultural systems. When folk groups aspire to align with this tradition, their own indigenous folklore and customs often undergo transformation, reinterpretation, or even suppression. One of the key strengths of Sanskritization is that it challenges the rigidity of the caste system by offering a pathway—however limited and symbolic—for upward mobility. It enables marginalized communities to seek recognition, dignity, and social legitimacy.
