Environmental psychology emerged as a distinct field in the mid-20th century, shaped by the growing recognition that human behavior cannot be fully understood without considering the physical and social environments in which people live. Its roots can be traced to multiple disciplines including psychology, sociology, architecture, urban planning, and geography, which collectively contributed to a more holistic understanding of human-environment interactions. The origins of environmental psychology are often linked to the post-World War II period when rapid urbanization, industrialization, and suburban development led to pressing concerns about human well-being in built environments. Researchers began to notice that architectural design, urban layouts, and environmental conditions directly affected stress levels, social behavior, productivity, and overall mental health. Early studies by psychologists such as Kurt Lewin emphasized the idea that behavior is a function of both the person and the environment, which laid the theoretical groundwork for environmental psychology. Lewin’s field theory, encapsulated in the equation B = f(P, E), where behavior (B) is a function of the person (P) and their environment (E), became a foundational concept that continues to influence research in the field. During the 1960s and 1970s, environmental psychology began to consolidate as a formal area of study. The emergence of social movements focused on ecology, urban renewal, and human rights drew attention to the impact of environments on human experience. The field initially concentrated on practical problems such as crowding, noise, environmental stress, and the effects of urban living on mental health.
