Antimicrobial resistance refers to the ability of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites to resist the effects of medicines that were once effective in treating infections. Recognizing antimicrobial resistance as a major public health threat, the Government of India launched the National Programme on Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance with the objective of preventing the emergence and spread of resistant infections and ensuring effective treatment of infectious diseases. The programme focuses on strengthening surveillance systems to monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns across the country.
