Unlike the Western biomedical model that primarily focuses on the pathology of the mind and seeks to correct abnormal behavior through medical intervention, the Indian perspective adopts a more holistic view of the individual. It integrates body, mind, and spirit, considering mental health as a balance of these three dimensions. In Indian thought, mental health is not merely the absence of illness but the presence of harmony within the self and with the environment. This balance is often linked to concepts from Ayurveda, Yoga, and spiritual traditions that emphasize equilibrium, discipline, and mindfulness as pathways to psychological well-being. Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine, outlines mental health through the balance of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Disturbance in these doshas is believed to lead not only to physical illness but also to psychological imbalances such as anxiety, depression, or irritability. Ayurveda also classifies personality and mental disposition into categories of sattva, rajas, and tamas, each influencing behavior, thought patterns, and coping mechanisms. A person dominated by sattva is considered calm, balanced, and wise, whereas rajas brings restlessness and passion, and tamas leads to lethargy and confusion.
