The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship mission of the Government of India launched in 2015 with the vision of providing “Housing for All” by 2022. It has two verticals—PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) for rural areas and PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) for urban regions. PMAY-Urban is specifically designed to address the growing housing needs of urban poor, slum dwellers, and economically weaker sections (EWS) amidst rapid urbanization and increased migration to urban centres. This mission aligns with the broader goals of inclusive urban development and participatory governance in India’s urban local governance system. PMAY-Urban seeks to ensure access to affordable housing through a demand-driven approach based on the preferences of beneficiaries. It encompasses four key verticals: (1) In-situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR), (2) Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), (3) Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), and (4) Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC). Each vertical caters to different socio-economic groups and housing preferences, thereby broadening the coverage of the scheme. Under the In-situ Slum Redevelopment, the focus is on utilizing existing land for slum dwellers using land as a resource through private participation. This vertical promotes integrated development while minimizing displacement. Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme provides interest subsidies on housing loans to EWS, Low Income Groups (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG) for new construction or purchase of homes. Affordable Housing in Partnership involves public-private partnerships for constructing affordable houses for the urban poor, while Beneficiary-Led Construction allows individuals to either build or enhance their existing homes with financial support from the government. A critical aspect of PMAY-U is its convergence with other schemes such as AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation), Smart Cities Mission, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, creating a holistic approach to urban transformation. ________ ____ __________ ________ _________.
