Colonialism refers to the process through which one country establishes political control, economic dominance, and cultural influence over another territory and its people. In the context of modern Indian history, colonialism was not merely military conquest but a comprehensive system of exploitation that reshaped the economy, society, politics, and culture. Various scholars have developed different theories to explain the nature, causes, and consequences of colonialism. The liberal theory of colonialism emerged during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Liberal thinkers regarded colonialism as a means of spreading civilization, modern education, law, science, and free trade. Railways, telegraphs, postal services, codified laws, and English education were presented as evidence of the civilizing mission. However, critics argue that these reforms primarily served British interests by facilitating administration, trade, and political control rather than genuinely benefiting the colonized population. The Marxist theory of colonialism provides one of the most influential explanations of imperial expansion. Karl Marx initially viewed colonialism as a destructive but historically progressive force that dismantled stagnant feudal structures and introduced capitalism.
