Discuss the role of colleges and universities in promoting adult and continuing education and extension.

Colleges and universities play a crucial role in promoting adult and continuing education and extension, a key component of India's policy on education. The Indian government recognizes the importance of adult education in enhancing the literacy levels, skills, and overall development of its population, especially in rural and underserved areas. Through colleges and universities, adult education programs can be systematically implemented, catering to the diverse needs of adult learners across the country. These institutions serve not only as centers for formal education but also as catalysts for lifelong learning and community development.

One of the primary roles of colleges and universities is to provide opportunities for lifelong learning. As per the National Policy on Education (1986), adult education aims to provide education to adults who missed out on formal schooling due to various reasons. Colleges and universities facilitate programs that address both basic literacy and skill development, which are crucial for personal growth and employment opportunities.
