The Contrast by Royall Tyler, first performed in 1787, holds the distinction of being the first American play written by a native-born citizen and professionally produced on stage. Set in post-Revolutionary America, the play operates as a sharp satire, particularly targeting the contrast between American and European (especially British) values, manners, and customs. Through exaggerated characters, witty dialogue, and situations designed to expose folly and vice, Tyler critiques the growing influence of foreign fashions and aristocratic pretensions in the newly independent United States. At the heart of the play lies a central thematic device, encapsulated in the title itself: the contrast between native American virtues—sincerity, simplicity, and republican values—and the imported, superficial, and often morally dubious habits of European (particularly British) society. This binary not only drives the narrative but also sets the framework for the play's satirical edge. Satire, by its nature, ridicules human folly or vice, often with the aim of inspiring reform. In *The Contrast*, Tyler skewers social pretensions, romanticized aristocracy, and cultural mimicry, establishing a critical commentary on American society of his time. One of the key elements that make *The Contrast* a satire is the use of character types to represent certain ideas or ideologies. The characters are not deeply complex or psychologically nuanced but rather stand-ins for the types they represent, making them ripe for satirical treatment. Colonel Manly, for example, represents the ideal American: honest, virtuous, brave, ________ _________ _________ ______ ____ _______.
