Discuss the pathogenicity of Leishmania spp. Write symptoms and distinct features of each manifestation
Leishmania spp. are intracellular protozoan parasites responsible for a spectrum of diseases collectively known as leishmaniasis. The pathogenicity of Leishmania is complex and influenced by the species of the parasite, the immune response of the host, and various environmental factors. These parasites are transmitted by the bite of infected female Phlebotomus (Old World) and Lutzomyia (New World) sandflies. Once inside the host, Leishmania primarily infects macrophages, where they survive and replicate within parasitophorous vacuoles, evading the immune system. The disease manifests in three major clinical forms: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral leishmaniasis, each with distinct pathogenic mechanisms and clinical presentations.
