The basis of remote sensing of vegetation lies in the unique spectral reflectance properties of plants, especially in the visible, near-infrared (NIR), and shortwave infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. ### Spectral Reflectance Characteristics of Vegetation Vegetation reflects, absorbs, and transmits solar radiation differently at different wavelengths. The typical reflectance curve of healthy green vegetation can be divided into three major spectral regions: 1. Visible Region (400–700 nm): Chlorophyll pigments in plant leaves strongly absorb blue (\~450 nm) and red (\~670 nm) light for photosynthesis. Green light (\~550 nm) is reflected more, which is why vegetation appears green to the human eye. 2. Near-Infrared Region (700–1300 nm): This region is characterized by high reflectance due to the internal structure of the leaf mesophyll. Healthy vegetation reflects 40-60% of NIR radiation, making this region crucial for assessing plant health and biomass. 3. Shortwave Infrared Region (1300–2500 nm): Reflectance in this region is influenced by leaf water content. Water strongly absorbs radiation in the SWIR region, hence, stressed or dry vegetation reflects more SWIR radiation. The shape and amplitude of the vegetation reflectance spectrum allow researchers to distinguish between different types of vegetation, monitor vegetation health, and estimate biophysical parameters. ### Vegetation Indices To enhance the sensitivity of remote sensing for vegetation monitoring, various spectral indices are used.
