If the key is intercepted or leaked during transmission, the entire communication becomes compromised. In contrast, public key cryptography, also known as asymmetric key cryptography, uses a pair of keys – a public key and a private key. The public key is shared openly, while the private key is kept secret. Messages encrypted with the public key can only be decrypted by the corresponding private key, and vice versa. This approach enables secure communication without the need for prior exchange of secret keys. Public key cryptography also supports digital signatures, authentication, and non-repudiation.
