Performance appraisal is a systematic process through which an organization evaluates the job performance of its employees to assess their contributions, skills, strengths, and areas for improvement. From the perspective of life span psychology, performance appraisal can be understood as a developmental tool that evolves with the growth and changes of individuals across different stages of their career and personal life. Performance evaluation is not only about measuring productivity but also about fostering learning, motivation, and adaptation, which are central themes of human development. As individuals move through various stages of their working life, the purpose and methods of performance appraisal need to adapt, supporting both professional growth and overall well-being. Various methods of performance appraisal have been developed, each serving different objectives and contexts in organizations. One of the oldest and most widely used methods is the traditional rating scale method. In this approach, managers evaluate employees on a numerical scale against set parameters such as punctuality, teamwork, communication, or problem-solving ability. The advantage of this method lies in its simplicity and ease of comparison across employees. However, it often suffers from subjectivity, halo effect, and central tendency bias, making it less effective in capturing the complexities of performance. From a life span psychology perspective, such a method may fail to account for the changing needs and growth of individuals at different stages of their career, as it provides little developmental feedback. Another commonly used approach is the checklist method. In this system, evaluators answer a series of yes-or-no questions about the employee’s behavior and achievements. This method reduces evaluator bias since the appraiser simply checks items, but it does not provide qualitative feedback that can guide employees in their development.
