Emotional and social development refers to changes in emotional communication, self-understanding, interpersonal skills, and relationships. The multidirectional nature of development suggests that some aspects of development improve while others decline. For instance, while fluid intelligence tends to decline in later adulthood, crystallized intelligence—based on accumulated knowledge—may remain stable or even improve.
