Human beings, as homeothermic organisms, are capable of maintaining a relatively stable internal body temperature despite external environmental fluctuations. When exposed to extreme hot conditions, the human body undergoes various acclamatory adjustments to prevent hyperthermia and maintain homeostasis. These adjustments occur both physiologically and behaviorally and are collectively known as heat acclimatization or acclamatory adjustments to heat. They involve immediate short-term responses and long-term adaptations to sustain life and efficiency in such environments. When the human body is exposed to extreme heat, the first challenge is the rise in core temperature due to an imbalance between heat production and heat loss. Heat can be gained from environmental exposure (radiation, convection, and conduction) and metabolic activity. The body attempts to dissipate this excess heat through various mechanisms. Sweating is one of the primary methods, in which sweat glands secrete moisture onto the skin surface, and the evaporation of sweat helps cool the body. Initially, sweating may be inefficient in unacclimatized individuals, but with repeated exposure to high temperatures, sweat production becomes more profuse and efficient, enabling better evaporative cooling. Alongside increased sweating, there is also an enhanced distribution of sweat glands across active regions of the body, which aids in thermoregulation. Vasodilation of the peripheral blood vessels is another significant acclamatory adjustment. In hot conditions, blood flow to the skin increases so that heat can be dissipated into the surrounding environment.
