The Miocene Epoch, extending from about 23 million to 5.3 million years ago, is often called the "Age of Apes" because of the remarkable diversification of hominoids during this period. Hominoids include apes and humans, and the Miocene witnessed the appearance of numerous fossil forms that provide valuable evidence about the origin and evolution of modern apes and humans. The fossils discovered from Africa, Europe, and Asia reveal that the Miocene was a crucial stage in primate evolution, during which many anatomical and ecological adaptations emerged. Early Miocene hominoids appeared mainly in Africa. One of the earliest and most important genera is Proconsul, discovered in Kenya and Uganda. It lived about 23 to 17 million years ago. Proconsul possessed a combination of monkey-like and ape-like features.
