Sanitation in rural India has historically been a major public health and development concern. Poor sanitation leads to water contamination, spread of diseases, malnutrition, and social exclusion, especially of women and marginalized groups. To address these issues, both the central and state governments have launched various strategies and programmes in collaboration with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) to improve sanitation coverage and behaviour in rural areas.
