The problem of evil is one of the central problems of metaphysics and philosophy of religion. It arises from the apparent contradiction between the existence of evil in the world and the traditional conception of God as omnipotent, omniscient, and perfectly good. If God is all-powerful, He should be able to prevent evil; if He is all-knowing, He should know about it; and if He is perfectly good, He should desire to prevent unnecessary suffering. Yet evil and suffering are evident in human experience. The problem therefore questions whether the existence of an all-powerful and perfectly good God is logically compatible with the existence of evil. The problem is traditionally divided into moral evil and natural evil. Moral evil results from human actions such as murder, cruelty, war, injustice, and exploitation. Natural evil includes suffering caused by earthquakes, diseases, floods, famine, and other natural events. Both forms raise questions about divine goodness and providence.
