Land reforms in India after independence were undertaken with the objective of restructuring agrarian relations and creating a more equitable rural society. The primary goals were to eliminate the remnants of feudal land ownership, distribute land more fairly among cultivators, ensure security of tenure, and enhance agricultural productivity. The reforms were also intended to promote social justice and reduce rural poverty, which was deeply rooted in unequal land distribution and exploitative tenancy systems inherited from colonial rule. However, while the intentions were progressive, the implementation faced significant political, administrative, and social challenges, which limited their overall success. The first major phase of land reforms involved the abolition of intermediaries such as zamindars, jagirdars, and inamdars, who collected rent from cultivators but did not contribute to agricultural production. Laws were enacted in almost all states between 1948 and 1956 to transfer ownership of land from intermediaries to actual cultivators. This reform was one of the most successful measures, as it affected nearly 20 million tenants and brought around 30 lakh hectares of land under direct state control. It eliminated a parasitic class and improved the direct relationship between the state and cultivators. However, the success was uneven across regions due to loopholes and exemptions.
