The position of women in ancient India and pre-colonial India reflects a complex trajectory influenced by social structures, cultural practices, religion, economy, and political authority. While ancient India witnessed phases of relative empowerment and autonomy for women, the pre-colonial period was marked by both continuity and decline in women’s roles, depending on the region and community. A comparative understanding of these two periods allows a clearer picture of the evolving nature of gender relations in Indian society. In ancient India, women enjoyed considerable respect and status in certain phases. The early Vedic period, often described as a golden age for women, witnessed relatively high levels of freedom and participation in social and religious life. Women were active participants in education, intellectual debates, and even philosophical discourses. Figures such as Gargi and Maitreyi illustrate the intellectual contributions of women who engaged with metaphysical discussions and challenged dominant philosophical ideas. Women also had access to learning through gurukulas and were respected as teachers or sages in some traditions. Marriage during the early Vedic period was more egalitarian, often delayed until maturity, and women were allowed to choose their partners in some instances through swayamvara. Widow remarriage was not stigmatized, and the practice of sati was almost absent in this early phase. However, with the later Vedic and post-Vedic phases, the situation of women began to change. The growing influence of Brahmanical patriarchy, the consolidation of caste system, and the expansion of agriculture altered the position of women.
