Leibniz and Spinoza, two prominent rationalist philosophers of the 17th century, offered comprehensive metaphysical systems grounded in reason. Both were deeply influenced by the scientific revolution and Cartesian rationalism, and both sought to understand the fundamental nature of reality. However, their aims in philosophy, while overlapping in certain respects, diverged significantly in terms of methodology, metaphysical commitments, and ultimate objectives. Analyzing their philosophical goals through the lens of research methodology in philosophy involves examining their ontological presuppositions, epistemological tools, logical structures, and conceptual frameworks they employed to investigate reality. Baruch Spinoza’s aim in philosophy was primarily ethical and metaphysical. For Spinoza, philosophy was a means to achieve intellectual liberation and live a life of rational understanding, ultimately culminating in the experience of blessedness or “beatitudo.” His magnum opus, *Ethics*, written in the geometrical method, begins not with ethical premises but with metaphysical foundations: definitions, axioms, and propositions about substance, God, and nature. This methodological choice reveals Spinoza’s belief that the ethical life depends upon a correct metaphysical understanding of the universe. Spinoza’s methodology can be seen as a deductive rationalism, modeled on Euclidean geometry. His metaphysical system begins with the assertion that there is only one substance, which is God or Nature (*Deus sive Natura*). All that exists is a mode of this single substance. The implications of this are vast: individuals are not truly separate substances, but rather modifications of one infinite reality.
