For a research study in Gender and Development Studies, I propose to investigate the topic: “The Impact of Women’s Participation in Microfinance Programs on Household Decision-Making in Rural India.” This topic is highly relevant as it explores how economic empowerment through microfinance influences gender dynamics within households and contributes to broader development outcomes. The research design follows a structured approach that aligns with the steps outlined in Figure 14.1 of Unit 14, encompassing problem identification, literature review, objectives formulation, hypothesis development, research methodology, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The first step involves identifying and defining the research problem. In this study, the research problem is understanding the relationship between women’s involvement in microfinance programs and changes in household decision-making patterns. The problem is significant because gender equality in decision-making is both a development goal and a determinant of social and economic progress. By specifying the scope to rural India and focusing on households participating in microfinance programs, the study ensures contextual relevance and feasibility. After defining the research problem, a thorough literature review is essential. Existing research indicates that women’s access to microfinance can enhance their financial autonomy, self-esteem, and social status, potentially altering household power dynamics. Previous studies, however, have often focused on economic outcomes without sufficiently exploring decision-making influence. By reviewing academic journals, policy reports, and NGO studies, this research identifies gaps, particularly the need for empirical evidence on intra-household decision-making in rural Indian settings.
