India is home to a vast and diverse population of indigenous communities, officially recognized as Scheduled Tribes. These communities have historically lived in close proximity to nature, relying on forests, rivers, and land for their cultural, spiritual, and economic sustenance. Visual anthropology — which studies cultures through visual representation, including film, photography, performance, material culture, and art — offers an essential lens for examining tribal movements in India. It allows us to perceive not only the political and economic dimensions of these movements but also the symbolic, visual, and performative aspects that are deeply embedded in tribal resistance and identity formation. Tribal movements in India have primarily emerged as a response to exploitation, marginalization, displacement, and cultural erosion. While historical accounts often narrate these movements through written records, visual anthropology helps us understand the nuanced expressions of resistance, community bonding, and identity assertion that written text might overlook. ### Colonial Disruption and Visual Documentation During the colonial period, tribal communities were often branded as "criminal tribes" under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. British anthropologists and colonial officers photographed tribes to classify and stereotype them as primitive. These images, which were meant to justify colonial control, have today become archival sources in visual anthropology. Visual researchers critically re-examine these photographs to explore how the colonial state visually constructed tribal identity and how tribes were reduced to ethnographic “types” rather than living cultures.
