Taking photographs of health signage in one’s city and interpreting their social meanings is an insightful way to understand the relationship between public health, governance, and society. When this exercise is analyzed in the context of *History of India – IV (c.1206–1550)*, it offers a unique opportunity to reflect upon how health, hygiene, and public messaging have been understood and regulated in historical as well as modern urban Indian settings. Let us first consider modern health signage that might be seen in urban centers today—such as signs promoting vaccination, messages against smoking or spitting in public, awareness about diseases like dengue, tuberculosis, or COVID-19, and slogans promoting mental health or cleanliness under campaigns like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. These signs are usually found in public places: hospitals, bus stations, railway platforms, schools, government offices, and roadsides. They use vivid images, simple language, and official logos to reinforce messages of public well-being, hygiene, and civic duty. These signs, while modern in appearance, are echoes of concerns that date back centuries. During the period from 1206 to 1550 CE, roughly spanning the Delhi Sultanate to early regional kingdoms and the pre-Mughal age, there were no health signs in the contemporary sense, but there existed systems of public health, sanitation, and urban organization which reflected the governing elite’s understanding of health and its relationship with power, religion, and community. Cities such as Delhi, Daulatabad, Multan, and Jaunpur developed under the rule of the Delhi Sultans—especially under rulers like Alauddin Khalji and Firoz Shah Tughlaq.
